From the Desk of Tim Dusterwinkle
MBHA President

Hello again fellow bear hunters. I hope you have been able to enjoy the summer so far. I've been busy training dogs and scoping
out good hunting spots for the upcoming kill season. The lower tag numbers of the last few years continue to pay dividends. People I've talked
to around the state seem to be generally satisfied with the number of bears they are finding, although that will likely change in the NLP
after the tag increases. MBHA would still like to see the bear numbers increase further. I have spoken to Kevin Swanson from the DNR
regarding the increasing population, and told him that we are willing to help in any way we can to mitigate nuisance complaints.

I would like to ask each one of you to do something to help MBHA this coming hunting season. Most likely, we all know a bear hunter
who is not a member of the MBHA. Please encourage at least one hunter you know to join MBHA. We draw our political influence and strength
from our dedicated members. If each one of us signs up just one new member, we can double the size of our organization. The old saying "there's strength in numbers" is very true, especially when it comes to interacting with legislators in Lansing. So please, sign up a new member this fall!

The video project MBHA made last summer has been a huge hit. The last time I checked, the video had been seen over 22,000 times! It has been shared around the country, and we have received positive feedback from many people. We handed out dozens of the DVD's in Lansing to legislators, NRC members, and DNR personnel. Our ability to bear hunt depends on educating people in positions of power about our sport. MBHA has again shown that we are leaders in the conservation community, especially when it comes to educating people about bear hunting, and the heritage we cherish. Visit our Facebook Page to check it out if you still haven't seen it yet.

MBHA donated 3 trail cameras and a rifle to the DNR's bear hunting clinics in Cadillac. Ed Shaw runs the program, and does a great job educating folks about all aspects of bear hunting over bait and with hounds. He had 180 people attend the 3 clinics. Ed is a member of MBHA, and is a great advocate for our organization.

We are in the early stages of planning next year's convention. It will be held at Treetops Resort in Gaylord, MI on
March 17th, 2018. Look for more Details to come.

If you would like to purchase a 52-Gun raffle ticket, Mike Pedigo still has a few left. Give him a call at 810-577-1220 to order tickets.
These are very nice guns, with an average price approaching $500.

I realize that sometimes I sound like a broken record talking about how it is important for us to be active politically, but I will not apologize for it! Just look around the country to see how complacency and inaction has cost bear, bobcat, an cougar hunters in WA, OR, CA, CO and FL! We cannot afford to rest, and we must recruit as many members and raise as much money as possible to defend our sport from HSUS.

I hope you have a safe and enjoyable hunting season. I am very grateful to live in a state that has such a rich hunting heritage, and am proud to lead an organization that for over 70 years, has been a faithful defender of that heritage. Thank you all! Until later this fall, may God Bless you and your families.
