From the Desk of Tim Dusterwinkle
Hello again, fellow MBHA members. First, I would like to thank all of you who attended our annual convention in March at Shanty Creek Resort. We again had close to 500 folks attend, and by all accounts it was a great success at a wonderful venue. It was the first time MBHA held a convention there, and I'm glad everyone had a great time. As you know, this is our largest fundraiser of the year, and it allow us to continue to be leaders in the conservation community in Michigan.
The convention ran very smoothly, thanks in no small part to the hard work of your board of directors. I would like to particularly thank Cliff and Maria Anderson, Laura Patton, Tonya Evans, Cindy Huff, Maryanne Pedigo, Steve Prahl, and finally Brett Hopp and Brian Druckenmiller. Thanks for all you hard work!
We had six Michigan State Representatives and Senators in attendance, as well as the DNR Director, members of the Wildlife Council, as well as other leaders in the conversation community. It is a testament to all MBHA members that we attract so many influential people to our conventions each year. They know we are passionate and dedicated to protecting the lifestyle we cherish.
Bear Hunting, and particularly hound hunting, are under attack all over the country. Lion and bobcat hunters in Arizona are working to defeat legislation that would outlaw their time-honored tradition. Rumors are circulating that HSUS is coming to Colorado next to try and outlaw lion and bobcat hunting with hounds there as well. Florida has been trying to have another bear season, but has been hamstrung by HSUS activists running misleading and emotional propaganda. Dog hunters in Virginia narrowly defeated legislation that would have severely limited their right to free cast hunting dogs by imposing severe trespass fines.
We are NOT safe from similar attacks here in Michigan, and if you think it can't happen here, you are living in a fantasy world. Remaining vigilant and united is of utmost importance. The MBHA leadership team is in almost daily contact with other organizations such as MUCC, UPBHA, MHDF and UPSA. Combine this with the great relationships we have developed with our legislators, and we are a formidable force. Please encourage your friends and family to join MBHA to help make us stronger.
Michael Pedigo is once again running the 52 gun raffles this year. Tickets for 2017-2018 are on sale now, with the first drawing taking place on June 30th. Order your tickets soon, as they go fast! Call Michael at (810)577-1220, or send and email to: Michael Pedigo
If you are a winner, you can either take the gun, or get a gift card to use at Jay's Sporting Goods for anything you want.
Thanks to all of you for allowing me to serve as president for another year, it is truly an honor to serve an organization with such a long history of conservation. Without the MBHA fighting for our hunting heritage, I believe we would have lost it many years ago.
That's it for this issue, God Bless, and I'll see you in the woods.
